Soil improvement under water in Sweden

The Östrand pulp mill of Swedish forestry company SCA is located in Timrå, roughly 400 km north of Stockholm. For the development of a new industrial site west of the plant, our experts from Bauer Spezialtiefbau proved that they can even accomplish impressive work underwater. Using the Single Column Mixing method (SCM), they constructed a total of 210,000 m³ mixed columns with a considerable length of up to 26.9 m in order to improve the soil for a future dam near the coast. No sooner said than done: but how can such large columns be installed into the ocean floor? The solution developed by our colleagues: using an enormous SCM mixing tool with a diameter of 3 m.
