Punatsangchhu hydroelectric power plants in Bhutan
In Bhutan, a country characterized by tropical conditions at an altitude of 2,000 meters, hydroelectric power plays a key role for energy supply. Bauer Spezialtiefbau was significantly involved in the construction of important hydroelectric power plants like Punatsangchhu I and Punatsangchhu II. For Punatsangchhu I, our experts executed cutter-excavated diaphragm walls up to a depth of nearly 100 m for the upstream cofferdam on each site, and returned several years later for the Punatsangchhu II project. Once again, challenging specialist foundation engineering works were carried out including drilling and injection work to stabilize the subsoil, both for slope stabilization and to build the caverns for the power stations. Despite tight spatial conditions in the caverns and logistical challenges, the works were concluded successfully.
